Brazilian Bee Propolis

honeycomb.pngPropolis is a complex resinous bee product primarily composed of plant resins and beeswax that has various consistency and coloration, ranging from brown to dark green. Among all of the propolis produced worldwide, Brazilian Green Bee Propolis is the most studied and coveted propolis to hit the natural health market with its antioxidant and cardiovascular benefits.

Brazilian Green Bee Propolis is considered as the world's best and most effective propolis. This is partially due to the fact that Brazil (the largest propolis producer in the world) has the proper climate and environment for bees to produce propolis throughout the year. Bee Propolis is usually sticky at and above room temperature (20 °C), but becomes very hard and brittle at lower temperatures, rendering it difficult to obtain or use in many countries during the winter time; however, the tropical weather condition in Brazil makes it ideal for harvesting propolis all year long2.

In addition, the Brazbee.pngilian rainforest provides a rich and unpolluted natural environment from which the bees could collect propolis from. While propolis from other locations (European/North American/Chinese/Korean/Argentinean, etc) is produced using 2 main kinds of plants (Poplars and Birches), the Brazilian propolis comes from more than 300 different types of plants and greatly contributes to its comprehensive health benefits3. In particular, the Brazilian propolis is known as a powerful antioxidant that helps fight bacteria, viruses, fungi, infections and of the respiratory system. It also has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anti-ulcer properties, and helps fight against tumors and cancer cells4. The main ingredients of the Brazilian propolis include protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, phenolics, and terpenes4, which is morediverse than the compositiopropolis-bottle.pngn of any other propolis.

Compared to other propolis, the Brazilian propolis is considered superior in that it contains the active ingredient Artepillin-C (ARC)1, an antioxidant which has been found to have extremely potent anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, hepato-protective, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and anti-ulcer activities.  The Brazilian propolis is the only one with up to 6-8% of ARC in its composition1

Additionally, Brazilian propolis is made by Africanized Honey Bees, a species of honey bee with a unique method of collecting propolis which makes their propolis different from that of all other bees. These Africanized bees differ from other bees in that they literally cut the tips of buds of their plants so their propolis contains complete vegetal tissues and not just the elements covering the external parts of the buds (commonly done by other types of bees extracting from poplar or birch trees) 5. Therefore the Brazilian propolis contains the membranes, cytoplasm and nucleus of the vegetal cells and these vegetal structures contain more water soluble substances than the poplar or birch version, so they work better at getting deep inside the cells of the patients who are taking this medication5.
